Initial verdict: Iteration is the name of the game for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 in our quick review, and much like its more expensive brother, the clamshell foldable gets a lot of QoL upgrades but not a lot of new features.

While everyone wants the Galaxy Z Fold4, most of us will only be able to realistically afford the Galaxy Z Flip4. And you know what? That’s ok – the Galaxy Z Flip4 is one of the cutest foldables you can get, and Samsung has done quite a fair bit of refining to their most affordable foldable this year.

Design

If you’ve seen the Galaxy Z Flip3, chances are you have a good idea of what the Flip4 looks like in person. There’s really not a lot that’s changed in the phone’s design and looks, and that’s ok since the original design formula worked really well in last year’s model.

You’ll be able to spot some of the physical tweaks like the more prominent camera module at the back, but at its core, the Galaxy Z Flip4 is the same phone externally as the one released last year.

That’s not a bad thing though – the handy form factor that the Galaxy Z Flip4 folds into makes it a perfect device for people who have limited bag or pocket space.

The biggest change here is the redesigned hinge. It’s stronger and slimmer, which allows the phone to have a narrower gap when the display is closed which Samsung hopes will ward off physical damage to the panel.

The phone also gets Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection as well as a frame made out of Samsung’s Armor Aluminum – making it the strongest clamshell foldable Samsung has made to date. As with last year’s model, the Flip4 has an IPX8 water resistance rating.

Display

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, there are really not a lot of changes externally to the displays of the Galaxy Z Flip4 VS the model last year. The external display is still a 1.9-inch AMOLED deal, while the foldable screen sports a 6.7-inch display. Like the Galaxy Z Fold4, the Flip4 uses Samsung’s Dynamic AMOLED screen, along with an FHD+ resolution and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The phone also has a 22:9 aspect ratio and a punch hole cutout that houses the 10-megapixel selfie camera.

While the external screen stays the same for the Flip4, Samsung has increased the number of widgets and quick setting controls that the phone can handle from it. There are quick-dial options for contacts now, as well as the ability to both call and text people without having to open the main display. There’s also a better selfie feature on the external screen, which allows you to take self-portraits with the main cameras.

As for display quality for the main display – well, it’s a Samsung OLED panel. You can expect top-notch image quality from this thing, along with all the usual goodies including variable refresh rates for improved battery life. The one thing that’s not quite there yet is the lack of a crease – there’s still a very visible one in the Flip4, and while it’s been reduced in this year’s model, it’s still very much there.

Cameras

On paper, the Galaxy Z Flip4 may look to have the same cameras as last year, but these cameras have been improved, at least that’s what Samsung says. You’re looking at a 12-megapixel main camera with an f/1.8 aperture and bigger 1.8-micron pixels, complimented by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with an f/2.2 lens. Samsung claims that the improved main camera can capture more light and has had its image stabilization improved for this year, though we’ll have to see how those improvements play out in actual use.

Performance, software, and battery

The Galaxy Z Flip4 comes with Qualcomm’s latest and greatest: the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, along with an array of storage and RAM options depending on what variant you buy. Much like its bigger brother, the Flip4 is a flagship phone through and through as far as performance is concerned.

Most of the improvements in the phone are done through the UI, and Samsung has improved Flex mode even further. There are significant UI improvements for video streaming and calling, as well as tweaks to make Instagram, Zoom, WhatsApp, and YouTube work better with the unique form factor.

While the Flip4 isn’t a multi-tasking monster (that’s the Galaxy Z Fold4’s forte) there are also decent multi-view options on tap.

Probably our biggest complaint is the small-ish battery – it’s only 3700mAh. Granted it’s an improvement over the 3,300mAh on the Flip3 it’s still quite small especially for 2022 standards – something that prospective buyers will have to take into account if they want to buy the Galaxy Z Flip4.

Wrap-up and early verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is an iterative step from Samsung as we found in our quick review, and it’s obvious that the Korean company was mostly focused on refining their clamshell foldable this year. There are a lot of noteworthy improvements in this year’s model, though there are few reasons for Flip3 owners to consider upgrading to it as far as we can tell with our short time with it.
