Meta Might Outsource App Coding to AI Soon

While everyone is exploring the full potential of AI, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg thinks that there will come a point that app coding might be outsourced to AI, eliminating the need of mid-level software engineers.

“Probably in 2025, we at Meta, as well as the other companies that are basically working on this, are going to have an AI that can effectively be a sort of midlevel engineer that you have at your company that can write code,” Zuckerberg told Joe Rogan at the latter’s podcast show.

Zuckerberg’s bold statement regarding the use of AI for app coding comes at a time where Meta plans to lay off around 5% of its 72,404 person staff (or around 3,600) to be laid off. Zuckerberg did clarified that AI won’t be replacing those roles yet, and that the layoffs will focus on its lowest performers.

The idea of using AI for coding is not new: Google CEO Sundar Pichai did said that more than a quarter of new code at Google was “generated by AI, then reviewed and accepted by our engineers” at Google’s October earnings call, and that the Gemini can also be utilized for coding.
