VLC is Adding AI Subtitles for Free

As one of the most popular media player apps in the world, with over 6 billion downloads and counting, VLC is set to roll out new features that will make use of AI. VLC will start its use of AI with subtitles, and the best part? VLC is rolling out its AI subtitles for free, and it uses open source AI models that run locally on your device.

Aside from being free, the fact that you can utilize AI subtitles without needing an internet connection is a added convenience especially if, say, you’re watching a KDrama episode and want English subtitles if your knowledge of the Korean language is not that great.

VLC owner VideoLAN demonstrated this new feature at CES 2025, and president Jean-Baptiste Kempf said that they remain committed to their ad-free business model across different operating systems–even at an era where streaming is the norm. From what they demonstrated, VLC’s AI subtitles support Japanese, French, Hebrew and German, so they covered at least some of the most-used languages.

While VLC hasn’t given a date when they will roll out the feature, The Verge noted that AI subtitles have been in the works using Whisper, OpenAI’s speech recognition system, though VLC’s approach appears to be built within the app.
