If there’s one thing that sports cars don’t like, it’s potholes–but don’t tell that to BYD with their Yangwang U9. The Yangwang U9 not only posts hypercar numbers (1,300 hp and 1,680 Nm of torque) it can also jump over potholes up to 6 meters long.
While that’s not quite as remarkable as the river-bridging Tumbler from the Dark Knight, but it’s an impressive feat of engineering nonetheless. The Yangwang U9 is able to do this thanks to BYD’s e4 platform equipped with a Disus X suspension system which can vary the suspension height depending on the road conditions. It also apparently allows some cool James Bond shenanigans as well. Did we mention that the Yangwang U9 did all of this autonomously as well?
It is powered by four electric motors with a combined power of 960 kW (1,287 hp) and 1,680 Nm peak torque. It can accelerate 0-100km/h in 2.36 seconds and drag race for 400 meters in 9.78 seconds. In November 2024, Yangwang U9 achieved a 7:17.9 Nürburgring lap. The car has 465KM of range under CLTC conditions.
We’re probably not seeing this car on this side of the world anytime soon (Yangwang is the premium car division of BYD) but who knows? There might just be a buyer or two for their James Bond-inspired hypercar, though you’ll have to shell out the equivalent of 13.4M pesos just to get one.
