NVIDIA’s AI announcements are Groundbreaking – Here’s What They Mean for You

NVIDIA’s CEO and founder Jensen Huang certainly had a great keynote yesterday during the start of CES 2025. Unlike the typical boring keynotes at the beginning of tradeshows that few people attend (sometimes begrudgingly), Jensen’s keynote was delivered in front of a 14,000-strong crowd at the Michelob ULTRA Arena. This venue usually seats just 12,000. NVIDIA, a company known more for providing graphics cards to gamers a decade ago has rapidly grown into an AI powerhouse, providing the hardware that powers LLMs like ChatGPT and the like.

While regular folks are more laser-focused on their upcoming RTX 50 series GPUs, the company announced key technologies that have the potential to change the tech landscape. Let’s break them down:

NVIDIA Cosmos

NVIDIA Cosmos is a powerful toolkit for building super-smart robots and self-driving cars, which includes AI systems that simulate the physical world, including physics, spatial relationships, and movement dynamics where these systems can learn how the real world works without the risk. With this toolkit, the company hopes that it will be easier and faster to create humanoid robots that interact with people more naturally than ever before. “The ChatGPT moment for general robotics is just around the corner,” Huang said.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what you can expect from NVIDIA Cosmos:

  • It’s like a super-brain for AI: Cosmos gives AI the ability to understand and predict how the real world works. It can learn from tons of videos and images to figure out how things move, interact, and change.
  • It can imagine the future: Instead of just reacting to what’s happening now, Cosmos can imagine what might happen next. This helps robots and self-driving cars make better decisions and avoid problems.

  • It’s like having a virtual playground: Cosmos lets developers create and test AI systems in a safe, virtual environment. They can see how their robots or cars would behave in different situations without risking real-world accidents.
  • It’s open for everyone: NVIDIA is sharing this powerful technology with other developers, encouraging everyone to work together to build even smarter and safer AI systems.

In a nutshell: Cosmos makes it easier and faster to build amazing AI that can truly understand and interact with the physical world around us.

Project DIGITS

NVIDIA described Project Digits as a “personal AI supercomputer” aimed at AI researchers, data scientists, and students. It’s intended to give smaller teams and individuals the power of AI development without needing to use massive data centers or cloud systems which is currently the norm for the industry today. Project DIGITS allows leaner, more agile teams access to models up to 200 billion parameters in size, allowing smaller companies the computing power necessary to compete against more established names in the AI space.

While Project DIGITS isn’t necessarily cheap (it’ll start at $3,000 or Php 174K in our currency once deliveries start in May) it’s still significantly cheaper than the hardware that’s used by companies that provide LLM data.

The price and portability of Project DIGITS mean that anyone who has a moderate amount of cash lying around has the potential to upset entrenched players like Facebook and OpenAI – just imagine what kind of AI systems can be built off of this.

Chat with RTX

While not necessarily announced during CES, Chat with RTX is another tech that’s aligned with NVIDIA’s AI future that you’ll be seeing more and more in the next few months. It’s essentially an LLM that uses your own local data – your Word documents, notes, and even video transcripts from videos you own or are interested in to create and provide personalized experiences.

Think of it this way: Imagine having a personal AI assistant that knows everything about you and your work. Chat with RTX aims to bring that level of personalized AI to your local computer. The best part is that all the data is retained locally, so there’s no chance that data brokers can get sensitive data about you.
