While there have been reports that the upcoming Huawei P50 series marks the last phone that is part of the Leica partnership, Huawei sent us a statement on the matter to clarify the reports.

Here’s the joint statement of Huawei and Leica:

The trustful and long-term technology partnership with the Huawei Consumer Business Group exists since 2015. Since the beginning the partnership brings huge value to consumers as well as to both companies. As the cooperation still continues, the associated compliance with all

confidentialities is of course preserved. The partners have agreed to secrecy about any details of the contract. Please understand that we will not be commenting on this.

In a nutshell, what Huawei wants to point out is that the partnership is still ongoing and that both Huawei and Leica agreed to keep details of their partnership confidential. This is also the same statement Huawei said late last year, where it denied that their partnership with Leica–which has been in existence since 2016 with the Huawei P9 series–is coming to an end. Huawei even told Android Authority that the claim was “absolutely fake news” and that Leica told the same media outfit that they “have no information about the termination of the partnership.”

Aside from the reports, Huawei’s statement on the matter also came at a time when Sharp recently announced the world’s first phone with a 1-inch sensor–along with optics developed by Leica.

With the current situation where Sharp is using Leica’s technology and expertise and that Huawei’s partnership with the German camera brand is still ongoing, we still do not know the details about its partnership for both brands. Right now, the safest thing to say is that the Huawei and Leica partnership still exists and that we expect more Huawei phones with Leica tech in the future beyond the P50 series.
