Smart Backs House’s Renewed Push for SIM Card Registration

With Congress renewing its push for SIM Card Registration, Smart has responded to these new efforts, adding that they are for the approval of the said bill—especially it it means protecting consumers.

“Consumer online protection has always been one of Smart’s advocacies. Safeguarding our customers against fraud is part of our commitment to ensure leveled-up customer experience,” PLDT and Smart President and CEO Alfredo Panlilio said.

“We also welcome any opportunity to support the legislative process and contribute to the crafting of the bill’s implementing rules and regulations,” Panlilio adds on the support of PLDT and Smart in the renewed efforts for pushing SIM card registration.

Smart and other telco providers are coordinating closely with government agencies in improving the security of its users’ data from scammers. Prior to this, Smart elaborated that they have a strong cybersecurity infrastructure, and that the source of the scam text messages are from individual SIMs.

To recap, PLDT and Smart invested close to Php 3 billion in strengthening their cybersecurity infrastructure against emerging cyberthreats, vulnerabilities, and other online criminal activities.

Aside from blocking thousands of SIMs that send smishing messages, smart has also blocked multiple URLs that are linked to illegal activities. On top of this, PLDT and Smart are active in information dissemination and customer education campaigns in identifying any red flags that indicate potential scams and fraud.
