Samsung’s in-house chipset Exynos has undergone a mountain of scrutiny in the past years. The company’s flagship devices usually came shipped with two chipsets depending on the region, with the Exynos slightly edging out its Snapdragon counterparts. Unfortunately, that trend was flipped on its backside in 2020 when the Snapdragon 865 obliterated the Exynos 990 in the benchmark tests and thermal performance, making the latter feel half a generation behind. It got so bad to the point that the South Korean company chose Qualcomm chips for its devices in its home country. The people behind the in-house chipset are back with a vengeance though – the Exynos 2200 comes with a GPU co-developed with AMD, and is marketed with the tagline “Playtime is over.” Has Samsung finally removed the kid gloves?

It appears so. The GPU making an appearance in the Exynos 2200 is the Xclipse 920, a newly-developed processor which will be doing the heavy graphical lifting in the S22 line of devices.

We’ll see here in this Vulkan test that the Exynos 2200 destroys the opposing Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 outfitted with the Adreno 730 by more than 2000 points. Of course while we know that this test measures mostly GPU performance, these numbers still hold optimism for games and other intensive tasks on the device.

OpenCL also bore witness to a massacre, besting the Adreno by around 50% in performance while running at just half its maximum clock speed.

On the other end, the CPU comparisons have the two processors almost on par, with the averages hovering around the 3400-3600 range. This is a considerable upgrade over the 2900-3100 range of the previous-generation Snapdragon 865 and Exynos 2100 processors.

We’ve yet to see how these numbers translate to real-world performance and repeated testing. Hopefully, we can see most if not all of the thermal issues resolved for both processors as they have to step up their game to ward off the arrival of the Dimensity 9000. If you check MediaTek’s official video, their chip scored 4000 on Geekbench, a safe 600 points away (one Snapdragon 820 worth of performance!) from the competition.
