The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 Is The Upcoming Midrange Successor

Just announced is the MediaTek Dimensity 1080, the spiritual successor to the Dimensity 920 launched last year. This midrange chip aims to bring more value at the price point and outdo its competitors to become the default option for manufacturers. What does it have to offer?

For those who can recall, the predecessor 920 actually performed decently on devices where it was installed. It was a midrange chip that did well to combat opponents from Qualcomm and the 900 that came before it. This MediaTek Dimensity 1080 builds on these platforms to bring some fresh air and remain competitive.

The main improvements include processing power, camera optical performance, and efficiency. These are thanks to, firstly, support for higher resolution imaging. Megapixel counts were formerly capped by the ISP at 108-megapixels but now have been boosted up to 200. However, as we know now, megapixels are not everything so it would be best to actually try out the cameras and check out samples prior to purchase.

A TSMC 6nm manufacturing node helps consume power more efficiently. The octa-core CPU, composed of two 2.6 GHz Cortex-A78 cores and six 2 GHz Cortex-A55 cores is no slouch though, so it wouldn’t be wise to underestimate this chipset based on its consumption. The Arm Mali G68 GPU is slated to bring your graphical demands to life, while LPDDR5 memory and UFS3.1 storage should keep everything nice and speedy.

CH Chen, Deputy General Manager of Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek, had this to say: “Continuing MediaTek’s legacy of optimizing power and performance, the Dimensity 1080 offers a full suite of advanced features that challenge expectations about what a 5G smartphone can do. This new chipset is designed to further enhance many of the functions that made its predecessor great, including processing power, camera and video quality, and time to market for manufacturers.”

The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 supports 5G networks and will begin shipments in Q4 of this year.
