What We Know About the Asus Zenfone 5 and What We Want to See

Rounding Up the Rumors and Leaks

Mobile World Congress 2018 is a week away and before we all make the trip to one of the biggest tech events in world, we thought that we’d round up some of the things we know about the phones being released and announced towards the end of the month. While there are certainly a lot of phones to cover (and we will try to get to all of them), we decided to start out with one of the phones that we just talked about this morning — the Asus Zenfone 5. Let’s have a look at some of the things we know, we think we know, and what we want to see from the Taiwanese company’s newest iteration of the Zenfone.

Let’s start off with the things that we do know

Living the Notch Life

Okay! This qualifies as something we already know and let’s be completely frank about this — It looks like an iPhone X. We can beat around the bush all we want but the notch above the screen plus the orientation and placement of the camera just reminds us too much of the latest flagship device from the California based company. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because the iPhone X is a good looking device. We’re hoping that the build quality will also translate in the Asus Zenfone 5.

It Will Have High End Specifications

Thanks to leaksters online, we now know that there will be at least one Zenfone 5 variant that can go toe-to-toe with the flagship devices coming out this year. Earlier we wrote about a certain variant of the smartphone seen on Antutu sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and 6GB of RAM. Asus gave us the base unit of the Zenfone 4 with a Pro version, so it’s more than likely that we’ll see the same setup here. We’ll know for sure when it gets announced next week.

Similar but Improved Cameras

Given the tagline of the Taiwanese company — We Love Photo — and the fact that they’ve been pushing their mobile photography game pretty hard, we’re most likely going to better camera performance on the Asus Zenfone 5. We mentioned the dual cameras setup already and they’re most likely going to include their typical setup of having a great main camera plus a wide-angle camera like their previous devices, which is great since we like having the option of capturing more scenery. No specifics about megapixel counts and sensors just yet but they’ll definitely improve on their cameras.

Now that we’re done with some of the things we do know, here are the things that we want to see with the Asus Zenfone 5.

Asus Going 18:9 with the Zenfone Max Plus M1

A Better Display

Yes, we know that it will have an  extended aspect ratio with the notch up on top ala Apple but what we want to see is Asus ship the Zenfone 5 with a better panel. Most of their devices ship with your standard IPS panel and while they do their job, we want to the Taiwanese company to really give the display on the new Zenfone more of a visual pop that an OLED panel can bring. Of course, the downside is that it might drive the cost up.

A Further Optimized Version of ZenUI

The company did the right thing by listening to their consumers and the reviews up on the web about their UI Overlay. They really trimmed down on the bloatware with ZenUI 4.0 but, again, we want to see them take it a couple of steps further. While many of us maybe wishing for a stock Android experience, that’s unlikely to happen so the second best thing is to optimize the overlay further and trim the fat ever more than they already have.

Priced Right for the Philippine Market

This is perhaps the largest pain point with most of the people who once celebrated the Taiwanese brand. When Asus released the Zenfone 2, the buzz and hype for the device was hard to ignore plus it was well deserved since, at that time, it was a really good smartphone given what you got and how much you got it for. It’s safe to say that a lot of the brand’s former patrons were disappointed with the price hike for the following two iterations of the smartphone. We really hope that Asus, and particularly their local arm, gets the pricing right for the device to bring back people into the fold and give us another solid option in 2018.

That’s pretty much for this rundown of leaks and rumors plus everything we want from the next device from Asus.
