Even Snapdragon Chips have their Fair Share of Overheating Issues

Last week, we found out from our community that some of their issues with MediaTek chips involve the lack of updates and being less optimized than Qualcomm chips. While there are people who prefer Snapdragon chips, they have their fair share of issues as well. We asked our community what they don’t like about Qualcomm chips, and it boils down to overheating issues. Our community specifically mentioned Snapdragon chips made by Samsung as the ones that have overheating issues.

The most controversial Qualcomm chips that are made by Samsung are the Snapdragon 888 and 8 Gen 1, both being notorious for running hot and throttling badly. Phones we reviewed using these processors ran alarmingly hot when we played demanding games with them. Ever since Qualcomm shifted back to TSMC with the 8+ Gen 1, most of the overheating issues has been resolved. However, looking at the comments of our community regarding MediaTek chips, Qualcomm has to catch up, as newer Dimensity chips have better thermal management.

Other modern Snapdragon chips that use Samsung’s fabrication process include the 7s Gen 2, 7 Gen 1, 6 Gen 1, 6 Gen 3, and 4 Gen 2–though these processors did not suffer from the same overheating issues as the 888 and 8 Gen 1.

Another complaint that our users pointed out with Snapdragon chips is that they are generally more expensive than MediaTek chips. There’s proof to this, as phone brands tend to use MediaTek chips more often in their midrange and flagship offerings–and usually reserve Snapdragon chips for their ultra premium offerings. An article by Digital Chat Station detailed this, explaining back then that a Dimensity 9400 would cost $155, while a Snapdragon 8 Elite would cost $190. That’s a substantial $35 difference, which brands could have utilized that amount for investing in other components like cameras, battery, display, and more. This is one of the reasons why affordable Snapdragon 8 Elite phones would have a few compromises.

When it comes to performance, our previous tests prove that the Dimensity 9400 and Snapdragon 8 Elite can go head-to-head, which explains why brands like OPPO and vivo launched flagship phones with the Dimensity 9400 first before unveiling their ultimate, Ultra devices with the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Overall, these are the only two complaints our users have regarding Snapdragon chips. With those in mind, do you prefer phones using a MediaTek processor or those using Qualcomm processors?
