AMD to Bring Ray Tracing to Samsung Exynos Chips

As a follow up to Samsung’s partnership with AMD for the latter’s GPU tech, AMD revealed during its COMPUTEX 2021 Presser that the Radeon GPU that will be used on future Samsung Exynos chips will be capable of ray tracing and variable rate shading.

“AMD is partnering with Samsung on its next-generation Exynos SoC, which will feature custom AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based graphics IP that brings ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities to flagship mobile devices,” AMD said in its COMPUTEX Press Release.

As for how they will incorporate AMD’s Radeon GPU, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su said that they will talk more about it later this year. That being said, we expect the successor of the Exynos 2100–the processor used for the Galaxy S21 series–to utilize Radeon GPUs, and that we will most likely see the Radeon-powered Exynos processor with the Galaxy S22 series.

We currently do not know how big of a boost will AMD Radeon GPU tech bring to future Samsung Exynos processors, but it has been a given that Samsung still has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to graphics performance.

The partnership is not just limited to smartphones. A report from The Korea Economic Daily reveals that Samsung intends to match Apple’s M1 processors–which it currently uses on the iPad Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook Air, and 13-inch MacBook Pro–with a new Exynos chip. The report also mentions the use of AMD’s Radeon GPU tech.

“The new Exynos will offer improved functions, including extraordinary computing power and battery efficiency, by utilizing a 5-nanometer processing technology. It’s good for both laptops and smartphones,” The Korea Economic Daily’s source said.

Aside from Apple, Samsung will be facing competition from Qualcomm as well, since the latter has been developing ARM-based processors that are geared towards Windows laptops starting with the Snapdragon 8cx from 2018.
