AMD’s Ryzen Mobile Chips Have Radeon Vega Graphics Inside

Expect decently powerful ultra-thin AMD machines in the future

While AMD still hasn’t managed to completely catch up to rival Intel, it has made significant bounds in the past few months. Its Ryzen line of desktop chips has managed to one-up Intel in many fronts, and now the company is looking to further threaten their traditional rival in the mobile space as well. Their new Ryzen 7 2700U and Ryzen 5 2500U mobile chips look to be a little bit faster than Intel’s offerings and have capabilities that will allow them to handle graphical tasks easily.

Both chips have a single Zen CCX, a module that contains four cores and eight threads along with 4MB of level 3 cache integrated with either 10 Vega compute units (for the 2700U) or 8 CUs for the 2500U. The 2700U has a base clock speed of 2.2GHz that boost up to 3.8GHz and a GPU clock speed of 1.3GHz. The 2500U is slower by 200MHz.

The chips have a nominal 15W power draw, and AMD says that the new chips beat out comparable Intel chips in multi-threaded tasks as well as in graphically demanding applications. AMD’s benchmark show their chips being more powerful than Intel’s current offerings, even their top tier Core i7-7500U. It’s only when that particular processor is paired with a GeForce 950M graphics card that the scores come close.

While AMD’s integrated graphics in their new Ryzen mobile chips will never be a match for a dedicated GPU, it still allows for decent gaming performance for games like Dota 2 and Overwatch with the graphic settings turned down. As for notebooks carrying the new chip? It’ll be limited to three devices for now: the 15-inch HP Envy x360, a 13-inch Lenovo IdeaPad 720S, and a 15-inch Acer Swift 3. No word yet on the release of Ryzen Mobile equipped devices hitting PH shores.
