Android 13 Market Share Doubled Since January 2023

While we’re waiting for Android 14, the latest version most phones can get right now is Android 13. While its market share back in January 2023 is small at 5%, it seems that phone brands are fast in adopting Android 13 (T in both pie charts) come April 2023, as the market share grew by more than double with 12.1% based on data obtained by 9to5Google.

The increased market share for Android 13 is set to outpace the adoption for Android 12 (S in the pie chart), which was at 13.3% based on Google’s Android distribution data for August 2022. That shows that phone brands are much faster to update their devices to Android 13 compared to Android 12. This was first seen with Samsung, which has updated a significant number of its flagship and mid-range phones to Android 13 for the past few months.

Aside from Samsung, other brands like OPPO, realme, OnePlus, and Xiaomi have also improved their pacing for rolling out Android 13 to their devices–and this can also be credited to these brands expanding their update commitments for their devices. Samsung currently has the best software update commitment for its flagship and select mid-range devices, where it offers 4 major Android updates and 5 years of security updates.

Given the pacing of Android 13 adoption, we will not be surprised if it manages to match or surpass the market share of Android 12 by Q3 of 2023.
