Apple Announces Refreshed Apple TV, Now 4K Capable

It’s smarter and better

Apple has taken the wraps off of the newest iteration of the Apple TV, simply named the Apple TV 4K. Obviously the new smart set-top box now streams video via 4K, and is HDR (High Dynamic Range) certified for better image quality.

The new Apple TV boasts the same processor that’s in their iPad Pro, the A10X, which makes it ideal for watching 4K movies and playing apps specifically made for it seamlessly. The Apple TV 4K has enough processing power in it to power the same games that you enjoy on your iPhones and iPads, great news for casual gamers. The processor is also powerful enough to support 4K content running at a smooth 60FPS – future proofing the Apple TV 4K for future releases that go over the standard 24 and 30FPS releases currently in the market.

Apple is also working with several providers like Netflix and Amazon to stream their content in 4K HDR to make the most out of the new set-top box. Apple will also be bringing live sports coverage via ESPN to the next generation Apple TV. That’s not all – live news streams will also be heading to the set top box as well.

You won’t have to pay extra for that 4K goodness as well – 4K movies will cost the same amount as full HD movies on iTunes, and Apple has also announced that they’re also upgrading existing HD purchases to 4K for free (if it’s available).

The new Apple TV 4K will cost $179 when it debuts on September 22.
