Are MicroSD Slots Still Essential for Flagship Smartphones?

Does it still matter when you’re buying a flagship phone?

When Samsung unveiled their next hotness, the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge, the biggest complaint that we heard from users (aside from the low-ish battery) was the exclusion of a microSD slot. It has been a staple feature of Samsung’s S series of devices for a long time, and for the first time the Korean giant has axed that particular feature from its flagship.

But it got us thinking: is the microSD slot still essential for flagship devices, especially devices like the Galaxy S6? While we use microSD cards in some of the flagship devices we use, we never really seem to use them at all. Take note that our devices typically have 32GB of storage above. That may be the rationale why more and more companies are axing the feature in favor of more elegant desings and unibody builds.

Don’t get us wrong, we feel that microSD card slots are absolutely essential for any device that has less than 32GB of storage, but for flagships with 32GB or more, the feature may get under-utilized.

What’s your take? Do flagship devices still need expandable storage in them?
