ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DU Hands-On, Quick Review: Metal-Clad Upgrade

We check out the latest FX505 refresh!

As part of its second-quarter 2019 refresh, ASUS recently unveiled its updated TUF Gaming FX505 laptops. But aside from the new Ryzen 7 processors and NVIDIA’s new GTX GPUs, the FX505DU looks virtually identical to the FX505DY we reviewed last month. What exactly has changed? Let’s check out its key differences from the FX505DY:

Tougher with aluminum

Unlike the FX505DY, the FX505DU gets an upgrade with a dark gray aluminum top cover—sporting a gold ASUS logo—and keyboard palm rest. We don’t mind the added weight since it makes the FX505DU more durable than its plastic-clad sibling.

While the keyboard layout remains unchanged, the FX505DU ditches the red backlight and accents for full RGB lighting with support for ASUS’ Aura Sync.

You get the same set of ports with the FX505DU: on the left side, you have the AC port, Ethernet, HDMI, 1x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.0, and a combo headphone jack. On the right side, you have your Kensington security lock and exhaust vent.

Like the FX505DY, you also get a 15-inch IPS-level Full HD display with 120hz refresh rate and 45% NTSC color accuracy. ASUS’ NanoEdge bezels remain present on the FX505DU as well.

The FX505DU retains the TUF Gaming’s red accents with the speaker grilles and rear vents. You still get ASUS’ patented Anti-Dust Cooling system (ADC) along with ROG’s trademark Armoury Crate suite.

Beefed up hardware

Being a higher-tier TUF Gaming laptop variant, the FX505DU comes with a Ryzen 7-3750H processor paired with NVIDIA’s recently-announced GTX 1660Ti GPU, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, and 256GB PCIe SSD. The increased RAM and the addition of a PCIe SSD make the FX505DU significantly faster than the FX505DY.

The FX505DU’s Ryzen 7-3750H processor is comparable to Intel’s Core i7-6700HQ based on results we obtained in CineBench R20.

The GTX 1660Ti’s temperature at full load maxes out at 81 degrees—typical for an NVIDIA GPU. At full load, the FX505DU’s chassis doesn’t run uncomfortably warm even during prolonged use.

With 3DMark’s Time Spy, the FX505DU’s CPU and GPU combo did well, averaging around 32 to 36 FPS in both graphics tests. We will have to see how the GTX 1660Ti measures up against GTX 1070-equipped gaming laptops in our full review.

That’s it for our quick review of the FX505DU. The FX505DU is priced at Php 71,995 and is available for pre-order until May 12. Each pre-order comes with a TUF Gaming Backpack and a 1-year warranty extension.
