Cherry Mobile Selfie Two Unboxing, Quick Review: Budget Selfie Shooter?

We unbox the Cherry Mobile Selfie Two!

Cherry Mobile is not new in the selfie game: Since introducing the Selfie in 2014, Cherry Mobile has been making an effort in adding quality camera units to its smartphones. Fast forward to 2017, Cherry Mobile has launched the successor to the Selfie with the Selfie Two. The successor to the original Selfie has a more streamlined look, along with updated specs. Here’s a quick overview:

Packaging and contents:

The Selfie Two’s packaging comprises of a sleeve containing the photo of the phone, along with its top features, and a white box. On the sleeve’s side, you get a quick rundown of the Selfie Two’s specs. Inside the white box, you get the unit itself, a MicroUSB Cable, a wall charger, a headset, and a user guide.

Initial impressions: Pretty hefty with its mixed plastic and metal body

Compared to other phones within its price range, the Selfie Two is noticeably heavier. This is due to the fact that it’s rear is made of a mix of metal and plastic. Its hefty build is a good thing, as the Selfie Two is a durable device even if it is marketed as a budget phone.

In the rear, you have your 13-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL camera, along with a dual-tone LED flash on top of it, and a fingerprint scanner right below it. At the near bottom part of the rear panel is the cutout for the speaker.

Even if it has a metal and plastic rear, you can remove it to reveal slots for two MicroSIMs and a MicroSD card, along with a non-removable 2900mAh battery.

As for the rear’s design, the Selfie Two bears similarities to the Desire R8, with the secondary camera being the fingerprint sensor on the Selfie Two.

On top of the phone, you have your headphone jack and MicroUSB port.

On the right side, you have your volume control and power buttons.

The Selfie Two is equipped with a 5.2-inch HD IPS panel, devoid of any capacitive buttons as it settles for on-screen buttons. Since it uses an older design (unlike the 18:9 phones coming out lately), the Selfie Two has thick bezels on both the top and bottom. Unlike Cherry Mobile’s other offerings, the Selfie Two does not have a screen protector, so it is advisable to invest in one to protect it from scratches.

Above the display, you have your 13-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL camera mounted on the center, with the dual-tone flash on the left and the earpiece on the right. Beside the earpiece, you have a notification light. We have to see if the unusual placement of the earpiece would affect the way we handle calls.

Powering the Selfie Two is a MediaTek MT6737 Quad Core Processor and 2GB RAM, which is pretty much what you expect in a budget phone. We got an average score (for a budget phone) during our initial AnTuTu run, but we will be putting the Selfie Two to the wringer to see if the initial benchmark score is consistent with its overall performance.

As for the operating system, the Selfie Two runs on stock Android Nougat, with a customized camera interface. While it does not have a CherryOS skin, the Selfie Two’s camera UI is similar to the one found in the Flare S6 Selfie and Flare S6.

Priced at Php 4,999, the Selfie Two is an interesting offering considering that it has a removable metal rear shell—a rare sighting for its price. While it sits in between the Flare S6 and Flare S6 Selfie, the Selfie Two brings the best of both worlds: The Samsung cameras of the Flare S6 Selfie, and the internals of the Flare S6.

That’s it for now. We will be doing a full test of the Selfie Two in the coming days, so stay tuned.
