Meet the Cherry Mobile Superion Odyssey

Cherry Mobile continues their rush of budget-friendly devices with the Cherry Mobile Superion Odyssey. This one is bound to turn heads because for Php7,499 you get a 7.85-inch 3G quad-core Android Jelly Bean tablet. That’s definitely something to think about especially if you’re in the market for a 3G Android tablet! Heck it’s even something to consider if you’re just looking for a very big phone, lol.

Here’s a quick rundown of the specifications.

Packaging and Unboxing

Just in time for the holidays, the Cherry Mobile Superion Odyssey comes in a big red carton box. As usual the hero product shot is up front while the technical specifications are all listed in the back. We think given the multitude of products on display though Cherry Mobile should put violators of the main features on the front of the box. For example: “3G Quad-core Android Jelly Bean Tablet!”. Something to that effect so that people will immediately see the value in it just from looking at the box.

Anyway, we peeled off the tapes along both sides and popped open the lid of the box. We were immediately greeted by the Superion Odyssey. First thought that came to mind?

Wow, it’s another Android tablet that looks like the iPad Mini! Hehe.

We’ll get to the tablet in a bit. We dug deeper into the box and found the usual manual, quick start guide, micro USB to USB cable, and wall charger. Seeing as this was a 3G tablet, Cherry Mobile also bundled earphones. Surprisingly the earphones looked decent.

As a suggestion we really recommend local brands to bundle screen protectors as well. It’s hard to find screen protectors that can perfectly match the dimensions and sizes of their products (since most of the ones on sale are specifically made from global brands).

Initial Impressions

The Cherry Mobile Superion Odyssey looks and feels very premium! The front is made hard polycarbonate plastic combined with glass for the display while the back is made from aluminum (top part plastic). It definitely looks much more expensive than Php7,499!

The Cherry Mobile logo and branding is at the back together with the 5MP shooter. At the top we have the micro SD card slot, headphone jack, power lock button, HDMI port, and micro USB port. Volume rocker is along the side.

We turned it on and we were satisfied (but not impressed) with display quality. Colors would be better if they made it a little more warmer and vibrant.

In terms of performance, there’s still that noticeable lag and occasional delays even with basic transitions. We really can’t fault Cherry Mobile for that though since a lot of Android tablets even with much higher specifications still have that problem. It looks like it’s something that Google will have to fix. The good news is the lag is almost virtually gone with the Nexus 7 tablet (2013) so maybe local brands and manufacturers will just have to try to get as much tech from that tablet into theirs, hehe.
