The Dimensity 7300 is Not As Bad as You Expect

After focusing on its Dimensity 8000 and 9000 series for several months, MediaTek has recently unveiled a new mid-range chip under its Dimensity 7000 series with the 7300. Unlike previous ones, the Dimensity 7300 is a completely new chip and aims to replace the Dimensity 7050 (which is a rebrand of the Dimensity 1080), which also translates to better performance, especially with gaming.

Currently, the OPPO Reno12 5G series and the CMF Phone 1 use the Dimensity 7300, and while people are skeptical about this new chip, it is a decent one overall after using both phones extensively for weeks.

Synthetic Benchmarks

Based on our tests with the CMF Phone 1 and OPPO Reno12 5G, MediaTek’s claims on the Dimensity 7300 do hold, as it offers a big bump in performance compared to the popular Dimensity 7050. We can confirm that the single-core and multi-core scores of the Dimensity 7300 show a considerable jump compared to the Dimensity 7050.

When compared to mid-range Snapdragon processors, the Dimensity 7300 is at par with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 when it comes to CPU performance. It’s a different story with GPU performance, as the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 trails behind both the Dimensity 7300 and Dimensity 7050.

How does the Dimensity 7300 compare to the Dimensity 7200? Based on our tests, the Dimensity 7200 has a lower multi-core CPU when compared to the Dimensity 7200–but has a more powerful GPU performance with a score difference of at least 1000 in GeekBench 6 Compute. The same can be said when comparing it against the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, where the Qualcomm chip is better than the Dimensity 7300 across all benchmarks.

Stress Tests

The Dimensity 7300 is stable at 99.5% in 3DMark’s Wild Life Stress Test, which indicates barely any drop in performance despite running the benchmark in 20 loops for over 20 minutes.

Overall temps are excellent on the Dimensity 7300: The Reno12 5G’s temps increased from a base of 31 degrees Celsius to 34 degrees Celsius after the stress test.

This meant that the Reno12 5G barely became warm after the test, and showed that the Dimensity 7300 has good thermal management–even better than its Snapdragon rivals. For comparison, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 did offer a higher score–but at the expense of higher temperatures. With the HONOR 200–a phone that runs a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, temps jumped significantly from 32 degrees Celsius to 41 degrees Celsius, resulting in the phone being warm after running the test.

Gaming Tests

Our performance test is not complete without gaming, so we used the Reno12 5G to play Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves to see what the Dimensity 7300 is capable of. Using Gamebench to measure performance, the Dimensity 7300 did better than what we expected.

For Genshin Impact, the Reno12 5G was doing an average of 40FPS at 88% stability with graphics set to High and 60FPS enabled. For comparison, we were doing an average of 34FPS at 94% stability with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 phone (we used the HONOR 200 for the test) on the same settings in Genshin Impact.

The Dimensity 7300 ran Wuthering Waves decently despite the game’s optimization issues: setting graphics to Advanced with FSR on and 60FPS enabled, we were doing an average of 28FPS at 85% stability, which translates to the game being playable. That’s better than what we got on a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 phone, where we only did an average of 24FPS with 46% stability at the same settings–indicating that Wuthering Waves is a bit more unstable on the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 compared to the Dimesity 7300 despite being more powerful.

Closing thoughts

After using two Dimensity 7300 phones for a few weeks and listening to critics, we can say that it is a decent mid-range chip overall. Despite the naming confusion, the Dimensity 7300 gets the job done as an alternative to the Dimensity 7200 for more affordable mid-range phones.

The big question, however, is with pricing. Currently, three phones in the Philippines use the Dimensity 7300. If you want the most affordable option, you can go for the CMF Phone 1 with its quirky and fun modular design–though you’ll have to manage expectations with its camera performance.

If you want something more well-rounded–not just with the cameras but also with overall software features–spending a few extra thousand Pesos for the Reno12 5G is worth it, as it best showcases the full potential of the Dimensity 7300.
