DJI Reimagines Drone Flying with the FPV

Going beyond its expertise in drones, DJI is expanding its offerings by making the FPV hybrid drone official. Their new product combines a first-person view and high speed performance, with the latter being a main characteristic of racing drones. Aside from those two key aspects, the FPV also has DJI’s trademark cinematic camera sweeps and its leading transmission and safety tech–ensuring that anyone can operate the FPV without worries.

For safety, the FPV has features like Emergency Brake and Hover to make it easier and safer to fly especially for new users. There’s also GPS-based geofencing to advise users of restrictions and hazards, along with an AirSense ADS-B receivr to warn of incoming airplanes or helicopters

Aside from the drone itself, the FPV ecosystem includes googles, a dedicated remote controller and a special motion controller that steers the drone based on hand movements. With the characteristics of a racing drone, the FPV has a maximum speed of 140kph, with DJI claiming of a 0-100kph acceleration in two seconds.

For transmission of footage, the FPV’s O3 transmission nas a 10km range and transmits 50mbps video at 1440×810 in 60FPS for a 142-degree FOV or 50FPS at 150-degree FOV. The FPV does this with a latency of less than 40ms, and as low as 28ms when Smooth mode is activated. For smooth move, both 142-degree and 150-degree FOV get a boost in FPS at 120 and 100 respectively.

The FPV comes with a camera module that is borrowed from the Mini 2, which is capable of shooting 4K video at 60FPS and Full HD at up to 120FPS. It is mounted on a one-axis gimbal with a wide 150-degree FOV. Battery life is rated at up to 20 minutes–which is lower than typical DJI drones but slightly better when compared to racing drones.
