Explainer: Google Wifi and Why You Need It In Your House

It’s an awesome piece of tech that kills dead spots

PLDT has finally brought over Google Wifi, and with it, its promise of eradicating dead spots in your house, forever. It does this via mesh networking, a new kind of tech that’s far more efficient than what’s typically offered via a normal internet plan by most providers.

What is Google Wifi?

Google Wifi in a nutshell is basically a system of devices that work in tandem to give your home or office better wireless coverage. Think of it as a wireless network for dummies – it’s extremely easy to setup and use. You don’t need to be a CISCO certified networking master to configure your home network- just plug in and configure via the app that’s available for both Android and iOS.

Why do you need it?

WiFi signals degrade when they have to pass through dense materials like concrete and steel, so a farther a room is from the router, the weaker the signal is. Now, this shouldn’t be a problem for 1-bedroom apartments and studios, but homes that have more than one room (or one floor) typically suffer from weak WiFi signals the farther you are from the modem.

Previously the only way to get around this problem was to add more wireless access points, which usually took the form of routers and range extenders. The problem with these devices was the fact that they were typically complicated to set up, especially if you’re not tech literate – there’s a reason why there are certification courses set up for IT professionals specifically for networking (CISCO trainees, represent). If you’ve ever had to go through the anguish of trying to change the SSID and password of the wireless router that Globe, PLDT, Converge or any other provider sends you, you know what kind of annoying pain we’re talking about.

Google Wifi is different because it allows almost anyone to configure it via the easy to use app. Once you connect the first Google Wifi point, you can freely add other points easily in multiple rooms of your house without having to contend with running ethernet cables to them.

The app also gives you a bit more control over the access points over traditional bridges and extenders. You want your kids to come down from their rooms and eat? Just shut off the access points in the second floor of your house and watch them come down, dazed over the loss of Facebook and Instagram.

The best part is that Google Wifi is finally here in the Philippines, via PLDT’s Google Wifi Plan 3799, which consists of three Google WiFi points and an unlimited 50mbps connection. If you’re an existing PLDT Fibr user, you can grab one for an additional Php 299 a month for 1 and Php 799 a month for the 3-piece set.
