Globe and Smart 4G’s Weakness: Rain?

Globe and Smart 4G’s Weakness: Rain?

When it rains... 3G/4G sucks?

Our testing of the Globe 4G Stick (Globe Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini) hit a rough patch in the form of the storm that hit Metro Manila. As most of you who own 3G-3.5G internet devices know, rain can drastically reduce broadband speed. This is just the weakness of wireless based technologies. It was a good time for us though to test how the Globe Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini would hold up. We took a couple of speed tests in Greenhills, Katipunan, Fort, and Makati and the results were consistent. Here’s a screenshot of one of the tests:

Talk about crippled internet!

This was taken in my condo which previously registered 3.8-4.5mbps. The speed was intermittent and sometimes would go up to 1mbps and even 2mbps but it would drastically go down after a few seconds. I checked the statistics tab of the Globe Tattoo panel and here’s what was shown:

Up, down, up, down... down... down... Up... down.

This is probably the biggest advantage of wired internet over the 3G/4G dongles. My DSL at home was consistent at 2mbps all throughout the storm… but it did hit 0mbps when we had a brownout, haha. If you do a lot of things on the internet often don’t rely just on 3G/4G dongles because it can really get crippled. It would be nice to have both though that would be a little costly. 🙂

Maybe they should offer 4G prepaid kits? I bet those would sell like hotcakes! Hopefully Globe Tattoo Lambo and Smart Evolution (LTE) will eventually come up with more budget-friendly 4G offerings.

How about you guys? How did your internet hold up during the recent storm that hit Manila?
