Google Announces Android 12L for Tablets and Foldables

Aside from Android 12, Google also announced Android 12L that is designed for bigger screens like tablets, foldables, and even laptops. While the public version of Android 12L will arrive early next year, Google confirmed that the Lenovo P12 Pro will be one of the first devices to have a preview version of Android 12L.

Despite that Android already has a multi-window interface, Android 12L aims to address that with different implementations like a two-column layout for foldable devices and tablets when used in landscape mode. In addition to that, Android 12L will adopt a desktop-like taskbar at the bottom for ease of use in opening frequently-used apps. Having a taskbar will also simplify how apps are launched in split-screen mode on Android.

With Android 12L, Google will be offering tools to allow developers to make their apps look better in various windows or views. Google will also offer an API for foldable devices as well for developers to make their apps aware of hinges or other boundaries. The Material You design system will be made available to developers too so that their apps will look more cohesive with the rest of the Android 12 ecosystem.

As a means to incentivize developers to have their apps optimized for Android 12L, Google is updating its Play Store to warn users of large-screened devices if the app they plan to download is not optimized.

With Android being often criticized for not being optimal for use on tablets or any device with a large display, Android 12L is a promising offering in Google’s quest on making Android an all-around OS for any device–regardless of screen size.
