Here’s A First Look at Apple’s 18W USB-C Charger for iPhones

To ship together with 2018 iPhones?

One of the major complaints with iPhones is that they ship with an old and slow-charging 5W power adapter, regardless if you buy an iPhone SE or an iPhone X. While the latter (along with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus) support fast charging, one has to fork up $49(~Php 2.7k) for a 30W Type-C charger if they don’t own any of Apple’s new USB-C equipped laptops. To make matters worse, iPhone users need to spend an additional $19(~Php 1.1k) for a Lightning to USB-C cable.

That’s roughly Php 4k worth of hard-earned money that every iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus user needs to spend in order to enjoy wireless charging. However, that might change—at least for the 2018 iPhones.

Recently, photos of Apple’s new charger have surfaced, and there are several changes: It is bigger than the usual 5W iPhone charger, and comes with a USB-C port—a first for an iOS charger. As for the charging output, the charger supports either 5V/3A (15W) or 9V/2A (18W). For reference, Huawei’s SuperCharge power adaptor supports 5V/2A (10W) and 4.5V/5A (22.5W)

The rumored charger is an engineering sample, so there may be some changes in the final design. Should the new charger be bundled with the 2018 iPhones as rumored, this will save users several thousand Pesos to enjoy fast charging.
