HUAWEI has formally unveiled the Pura 80 series in China, and the Ultra is the attention grabber with a switchable telephoto system. The idea with this design is that the telephoto camera has two mirrors that support 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom, allowing the 50-megapixel, 1/1.28-inch sensor to switch between an 83mm or 212mm focal length equivalent when needed. This approach gives the Pura 80 Ultra an increased optical range by 129% compared to its predecessor. This unique approach to the telephoto camera is a variation of what Sony has with the Xperia 1 VII.
For the main camera, you’re getting a 1-inch RYYB sensor with a 50-megapixel resolution and a f/1.6-4.0 variable aperture. The pop-up design of the main camera is gone; instead HUAWEI uses its in-house TCG triple-real-time fusion technology that increases the dynamic range to as high as 16EV, making the Pura 80 Ultra perform very well regardless of lighting conditions. The ultrawide camera, on the other hand, uses a 40-megapixel sensor.
HUAWEI did not disclose the processor powering it, but you do get 16GB RAM and up to 1TB storage, along with a 5700mAh battery that supports 100w wired and 80w wireless charging. It comes with HarmonyOS Next out of the box, which is HUAWEI’s in-house software that’s completely different from Android. You also get a 6.8-inch 120hz LTPO OLED display, stereo speakers, and an IP68/69 rating.
The Pura 80 Ultra is priced at CNY 9999(~Php 78k) for the 512GB variant and CNY 10999(~Php 86k) for the 1TB variant. There’s no word if HUAWEI has plans of making it available outside of China.
