Samsung remains number 1 in spite of a decline in market share

International Data Corporation (IDC) just released its latest report for the worldwide smartphone market for Q2 2018. The top 5 brands consist of Samsung, Huawei, Apple, Xiaomi, and OPPO.

Looking close to the data, Xiaomi experienced the biggest growth from last year at 48.8%, while Samsung experienced a notable dip at 10.4%. Huawei’s 40.9% growth was enough to overtake Apple for the number two spot.

Among the factors leading to Huawei’s growth is the positive reception for the P20 and P20 Pro for the first half of 2018, and the GPU Turbo announcement for the second half. In addition, strong sales for Honor helped Huawei propel into the number two spot.

Samsung’s decline is due to the poor sales of the Galaxy S9 and S9+. The South Korean company expects to get back on track with the arrival of the Galaxy Note 9 this August.
