Huawei’s P40 Series Breaks New Boundaries In Mobile Photography

The best cameras in a Huawei smartphone yet

Huawei has officially unveiled its flagship P40 series at an online-only event tonight, and there’s a lot of new tech in the company’s new flagships. Since the P-series is centered around mobile photography, let’s tackle the cameras first: both the P40 and P40 Pro come with an all-new, 50-megapixel UltraVision RYYB main rear camera, based on a custom IMX700 1/1.28-inch sensor.

The new camera has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a Huawei – uses an RYYB array that allows it to collect far more light compared to a similarly-sized sensor, and sport octa-phase detection autofocus for lighting fast acquisition of subjects. With the new sensor, the P40 can shoot as high as ISO 204800 while the P40 Pro can shoot up to an insanely high ISO 409600.

Obviously both phones have different rear camera configurations: the P40 comes with an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS and 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, while the P40 Pro has a 40-megapixel ultra-wide-angle cine camera, a 12-megapixel Super Sensing periscope telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and OIS, and a 3D depth sensor. The P40 Pro’s telephoto camera can do 10x hybrid zoom and up to 50x with digital zoom. Both phones have Huawei’s XD Fusion Engine.

For the first time in the P series, the P40 Pro gets a Plus model that swaps Gorilla Glass for Nanotech Ceramic for the back panel. In addition, the P40 Pro Plus has two telephoto cameras: an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and an 8-megapixel periscope camera with 10x optical zoom–both equipped with OIS.

While the P40 gets a flat 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display, the P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus come with a 6.58-inch OLED display that curves on all four sides. The P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus’s display come with a 90hz refresh rate as well. All three models have an in-display fingerprint scanner and a pill-shaped punch hole where you have a 32-megapixel selfie camera and IR sensor for secure face unlock and depth effects. The P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus’ selfie camera also comes with autofocus.

For the battery, the P40 has a 3800mAh battery with 22.5w wired charging, while the P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus comes with a 4200mAh battery with 40w wired charging, class-leading 40w wireless charging (27w wireless charging on the P40 Pro), and 5w reverse wireless charging. Both phones come with Android 10-based EMUI 10.1 out of the box, along with Huawei Mobile Services.
