It is the highest for a phone with a single rear camera setup

At a time where phones are equipped with dual, triple, or even quadruple rear camera setups, it is presumed that having more cameras equate to better photo and video quality. Google’s Pixel 2 proves that those with single rear cameras have a fighting chance, and this has been solidified further by Apple’s iPhone XR.

DxOMark recently released its results for Apple’s single rear camera-sporting iPhone, and its 101 overall score beats the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, which scored 99 overall. While it is just a point behind the Huawei P20, what makes the iPhone XR impressive is that it is the highest ranked single rear camera smartphone ever tested by DxOMark.

Breaking down the scores, the iPhone XR scored 103 in the photo section, with DxOMark citing its fast autofocus, accurate exposure, and impressive dynamic range as its key strengths. Going to the video aspect, DxOMark emphasizes the iPhone XR’s effective stabilization, fast autofocus, and good overall dynamic range as key factors to its 96 video score.

Don’t be dismayed at its zoom and bokeh score on the photo category, since the iPhone XR’s single rear camera setup has its limitations; the lone camera lens has a fixed focal length, and its portrait mode capabilities are limited to photographing human subjects.
