Leaked Kirin 980 Specs Reveal In-House GPU, 7nm Process

In-house GPU rumored to be better than Qualcomm’s Adreno 630

As we wait for the successor to Huawei’s Kirin 970, new details on the upcoming Kirin 980 have emerged. Aside from utilizing a 7nm FINFET process, the Kirin 980 will have a maximum clock speed of 2.8Ghz—which is on par with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845. This is made possible by using four Cortex A77 cores and four Cortex A55 cores paired with the latest AI chip.

What’s interesting with this new processor is that the Kirin 980 will have an in-house GPU claimed to be faster than the Adreno 630 GPU used with the Snapdragon 845. Huawei’s Kirin chips are not that strong in the GPU department, so having an in-house GPU is logical if Huawei wants to match the GPU performance of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips.

The new processor is expected to power the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, which means Huawei will formally unveil it during IFA 2018.
