New SoC from MediaTek is aimed at the “super-mid market”

Looks like MediaTek is bolstering its LTE armory. After announcing their new Octa-core chip with LTE, MediaTek has announced their newest SoC, the 64-bit quad-core MT6732 LTE. The SoC is aimed at the super-mid market according to the Taiwanese chipmaker, and features ARM’s 64-bit Cortex-A53 cluster and the next generation Mali-T760 GPU, which is touted to be 400% more energy efficient than its predecessor, the Mali-T604.

The new SoC promises to deliver speeds up to 1.5GHz, and low-power 1080p 30fps video playback, which should extend the battery life of whatever device the SoC is put into.

So why the new LTE SoC? Well it seems that MediaTek is positioning this particular SoC as a cheaper alternative to their LTE octa-core SoC unveiled a few weeks ago. And if the tagline to this new SoC is any indication, it might mean that we’ll finally be getting really affordable LTE equipped devices sooner rather than later. And since MediaTek is hands-down the favorite chip manufacturer of local brands, that means we may see really affordable LTE devices from local brands like MyPhone, Cherry Mobile and Starmobile soon!
