MediaTek Giving Up On High-end Line To Concentrate On Mid-range Chipsets: Report

It’s essentially giving up the high-end market to Samsung, Huawei and Qualcomm

MediaTek is a huge chipset brand, and their SoC’s has adorned everything from a budget phone in India to a flagship device in China. But their flagship X30 chipset hasn’t been doing so well against the offerings of their two main competitors, and honestly the X30 is left in the dust by Huawei’s Kirin 970, Samsung’s Exynos 8895 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processors.

The X30 currently only resides in the Meizu Pro 7 Plus, which is partly because MediaTek is one of the company’s main investor. That’s one of the reasons why MediaTek will no longer focus on flagship processors, and instead focus on its core competencies: budget and mid-range chipsets.

Finbarr Moynihan, MediaTek’s general manager for international sales says during an interview that the company will be taking a break from flagship chips to focus on mid-range devices and their P-series hardware.

“Probably the X30 was too high for some of that [the cheaper phones – ed] and didn’t deliver on some of the global modem stuff to make it applicable in that space. So that’s why we’ve kind of retrenched a little bit and focused more on… the Helio P, the new premium,” he says on an interview.

While the X30 has appeared on only one phone, the company’s P-series of chipsets have been well received and utilized by several smartphone makers, from smaller Chinese brands to international giants.

MediaTek will effectively put on the brakes for a while for its flagship offerings, so you’ll probably won’t see another flagship chipset from the company next year.
