Dash Charge trumps over Quick Charge
While people lament on the absence of wireless charging in the OnePlus 5T, their insistence in sticking to their proprietary Dash Charge is worth it: In the latest series of tests by Tom’s Guide, the OnePlus 5T emerged as the phone with the fastest charging speed, trumping over the LG V30, Google Pixel 2, and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
In their test, Tom’s guide was able to charge the OnePlus 5T from zero percent to 59% in 3o minutes–which is way faster than the charging rates obtained from the Pixel 2 and Note 8 at 38% and 35% respectively.
For an in-depth basis, the OnePlus 5T, LG V30, and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 have a similar-sized battery at 3300mAh, while the Google Pixel 2 has a smaller battery at 2700mAh. Save for the iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus, all phones are tested using the charger supplied with them.
As to how OnePlus achieved such a feat, it all boils down to how Dash Charge works. Unlike Qualcomm’s Quick Charge, which relies on delivering a higher voltage to attain a quicker charge, Dash Charge (also known as VOOC for OPPO and Vivo phones) uses a higher amperage to achieve faster charging speeds. This is noticeable with their charging ratings: Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 delivers up to 6.5V at 3A, while OnePlus’ VOOC delivers 5V at 4A. The result: Quick Charge 3.0 delivers 19.5W, while VOOC delivers 20W.
While Qualcomm has licensed Quick Charge to third-party companies, VOOC remains to be a proprietary tech to phones under the BBK Electronics Group (that’s OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus for you).
