Beyond ChatGPT, OpenAI is looking to develop its own AI device, with CEO Sam Altman saying that the idea is going to give OpenAI employees a “chance to do the biggest thing we’ve ever done as a company here,”.
The mystery OpenAI device is made in collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive, who has a startup called io. In a joint statement, both Altman and Ive said that io is merging with OpenAI “to work more intimately with the research, engineering and product teams in San Francisco.”
Details about OpenAI’s AI device is scarce, but Ben Geskin describes it as “capable of being fully aware of a user’s surroundings and life” while not being obtrusive. It can be placed on a pocket or on a desk, and is said to be the “third core device” after a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, which means that this mystery device will be essential to everyone.
Interestingly, the OpenAI device will neither be a pair of glasses or a phone, and that makes us think it will be similar to the Humane AI Pin and rabbit r1, both being failures in their role as an AI device. This means that Altman and Ive have multiple challenges to face in order to prove that the OpenAI device is unlike previous AI devices that flopped badly.
