OPPO Unveils 5G-Equipped Find X Prototype

Slated to be one of the first commercial 5G smartphones

OPPO makes a follow up to its 5G efforts after a successful test using a modified R15 last year. For its latest attempt, OPPO unveiled a 5G version of the Find X at the 2018 China Mobile Global Partners Conference.

This version of the Find X uses a Snapdragon 855 processor paired with Qualcomm’s 5G-ready X50 modem. Beyond testing the 5G band like what they did last time, OPPO demonstrated different applications of 5G technology. These include enhanced web browsing, video replay, and group video calls.

OPPO said that the 5G-enabled Find X is set to be available this year, making them one of the first brands to launch a commercially-available 5G smartphone.

OPPO’s previous 5G efforts include completing the world’s first 5G 3D video call featuring structured light technology in May 2018 and making the world’s first multiparty video call on a smartphone via 5G network last November 30, 2018.

OPPO’s next 5G effort? Introducing the concept of “5G+”—an era that gives emphasis on experience. “We believe that rich 5G application scenarios and killer 5G applications will emerge in the future, bringing disruptive experiences to users,” OPPO Research Institute Levin Liu said.

OPPO’s vision of a 5G ecosystem is centered through the smartphone, where it is connected to a variety of smart devices to deliver a seamless and intelligent experience to end users. To make this possible, OPPO will continue its collaboration with Qualcomm, network infrastructure manufacturers, telecom service providers, and other supply chain partners to perfect 5G technology before is wider rollout.

OPPO will be talking more about its 5G efforts at MWC 2019 in Barcelona.
