Motorola is back with Rugged Phones with the Defy

Rugged phones are a niche market, and you can count the number of brands that actually release such phones. The latest to join this niche market is Motorola, when it announced the Defy in Europe. The first phone under its partnership with Bullitt Group, the Defy is essentially a ruggedized version of the Moto G9 that was launched last year.

Motorola Defy Specs

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 octa-core processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • 6.5-inch HD+ IPS display, 21:9 aspect ratio
  • 64GB expandable storage
  • Triple rear cameras: 48-megapixel f/1.7 main camera; 2-megapixel f/2.4 depth sensor; 2-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera; with PDAF, dual-tone LED flash
  • 8-megapixel f/2.2 front camera
  • Dual SIM
  • 3G, LTE
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, A-GPS
  • Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner
  • 5000mAh battery
  • 20W charging
  • Android 10

Being meant to handle the challenges nature has to offer, the Defy has a ruggedized dual-sealed plastic body that is IP68 certified for water and dust protection and can work in extreme temperatures ranging from -25°C to +55°C. The rugged body also makes the Defy drop-proof for up to 1.8 meters in height–that’s provided that it lands on the side or corner frame. Since it is waterproof, you can actually wash the Defy with soap and mild disinfectants. As an additional protection to drops, the Defy comes with a lanyard as well.

To make it protected further, the Defy has a 0.7mm thick Gorilla Glass Victus for the display, and Motorola claims that it can be used even with wet fingers. Save for those tweaks, the Defy has the same specs as the Moto G9: Snapdragon 662, 6.5-inch HD+ display, 8-megapixel selfie snapper, 48-megapixel main rear camera that is accompanied by a pair of 2-megapixel sensors, and a 5000mAh battery with 20w wired charging.

Motorola Defy price

The Defy is priced at 325 Euros(~Php 18.8k) and will be available in European and South African markets. No word yet if it will be available in other regions. That’s a steep price for a phone with 2020 specs, but it makes up for it with the tank-like build that can handle almost all of nature’s elements.
