Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 Is A Graphics Powerhouse

Not much improvement on the CPU, but man is that GPU brutal

The biggest smartphone extravaganza is just a few weeks away, and like clockwork Qualcomm has allowed some tech outfits to kick the tires on its new flagship Snapdragon 845 flagship chipset to build hype. While Samsung’s Galaxy S9 was obviously not present for the tests, the company provided a reference test bed so the chipset could be benchmarked.

While the CPU performance of the Snapdragon 845 was in line with what most people expected in Qualcomm’s latest flagship to deliver (a jump of 2.8GHz maximum clock speed for the performance cores from 2.47GHz last year) it’s the new Adreno 630 GPU that’s the real star of the show.

Tests show that the Adreno 630 offers 30 percent better performance and up to 2.5 times faster display output compared to last year’s offering, and does all of that with less power (up to 30 percent less) thanks to the 10nm lithography of the new chipset.

While the Adreno 630 still lags a little bit behind Apple’s custom chip that powers the iPhone X, it manages to outpace almost every other available chipset in the market for Android phones in benchmark tests by a good 20 percent.

Obviously benchmarks alone don’t really show a chip’s overall performance, but considering the SD845 will be powering most flagship phones this 2018, we’ll be seeing just how good it is in reality soon enough.
