Can the Honor 8X go against the big brands?

The Honor 8X is one of the best value mid-range phones available today thanks to its Php 12,990 sticker price. Aside from a huge display, the Honor 8X packs quite a fair bit of features that many people look for.

In today’s comparo, we’ll be pitting the Honor 8X against an offering of a well-known household name. Samsung’s Galaxy J8 is a solid offering from the Korean brand, so it’ll be interesting to know how that particular phone (which retails only 1K more) fare against the scrappy new upstart.

Display

On size and resolution alone, the Honor 8X easily takes the cake with its 6.5-inch Full HD+ panel, which is superior over the Galaxy J8’s 6-inch HD+ display. However, the latter has the advantage of using a notch-free display, along with an AMOLED panel that delivers deeper blacks and more vibrant colors compared to the Honor 8X’s IPS panel.

Internals

On paper, the Honor 8X’s Kirin 710 processor is better than the Galaxy J8’s Snapdragon 450 processor, as the former has a higher clock speed at 2.2Ghz at compared to the latter’s 1.8Ghz.

In addition, the Honor 8X offers a bigger RAM/Internal storage combination with 4GB/128GB over the Galaxy J8’s 3GB/32GB configuration.

Cameras

The Galaxy J8 has the upper hand with its brighter camera setup, consisting of 16-megapixel f/1.7 and 5-megapixel f/1.9 rear cameras and 16-megapixel f/1.9 front camera. On the other hand, the Honor 8X’s cameras come with AI built in, which tweaks the color, saturation, and other parameters depending on the image being taken for better photos.

Battery

The Honor 8X offers a bigger battery than the Galaxy J8 with its 3750mAh cell. However, the Galaxy J8 can match the battery life of the Honor 8X since it uses a less power-hungry HD+ AMOLED panel.

Pricing

While the Galaxy J8 being more expensive than the Honor 8X by Php 1,000, the latter offers better value for money. Aside from a bigger display and battery, the Honor 8X has a better set of internals compared to the Galaxy J8.
