Rumor: Xiaomi Reportedly Working with Google on a New Android One Device

Keeping the Android One dream alive.

The gossip grapevine has some interesting news for Xiaomi fans today. The Chinese electronics titan is supposedly working on an Android One device with Google’s blessing. However, instead of being a budget-oriented offering like any other Android One phone, Xiaomi’s Android One handset will be sporting mid-range specs as it’s allegedly based on the recently released Mi 5X.

According to the leaked report, the Xiaomi A1 – it’s internal name for now – will be coming with a 5.5-inch Full HD display and dual rear cameras. As it’s an Android One phone, the A1 is expected to come with a stock Android OS implementation, most likely Android 7.0 Nougat.

To keep costs reasonable within the Android One branding, Xiaomi is expected to cut back on the A1’s core hardware like its chipset, RAM and storage options. If the Mi 5X shipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, the A1 is likely to run a lesser budget-tier Snapdragon processor like an SD 435 or an SD 430. Given the fact that Android One devices are meant for emerging markets, it’s also likely that the Xiaomi A1 might see a wider market availability, perhaps even officially landing on SEA shores.

For now, take the news with a grain of salt until more related reports surface.
