Sony Officially Announces 2-year Update Support For Premium Models

It’s the first company aside from Google to put it in writing

While buyers of top-tier flagships know that they’re (eventually) getting updates on their latest and greatest, companies aside from Google have shied away from actually putting their commitment to Android OS updates on paper. Well, Sony has just put their money where their mouth is, and have officially put their commitment to updating any premium device bought from them to the latest version of Android up to two years on their website.

The only other company to do this is Google, who has promised to give both their Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL OS updates up to three years from the date of their launch. And while Sony hasn’t applied the same policy to their mid-range smartphones, they did kind of promise support but says that they may choose not to upgrade if “testing does not meet our exacting standards and we feel the hardware isn’t capable of delivering a stable user experience.”

Sony has also announced several smartphones wil be getting an new Android security patch, which will protect the following devices from Meltdown and Spectre flaws: Xperia XA1, Xperia XA1 Ultra, Xperia L1, Xperia XA1 Plus, Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra, Xperia L2, Xperia X Performance, Xperia X, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XZ, Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZs, Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact.
