We Hope Starlink Brings its Compact Satellite Internet Kit to the Philippines

While satellite internet services like Starlink are available in the Philippines, they remain to be expensive: the satellite kit itself costs Php 28,000, and that does not include the additional Php 2,700 monthly subscription fee that you need to pay. Aside from that, setting up Starlink can be cumbersome given its size. Those looking for a more compact alternative can opt for the Starlink Mini, which is available in the US and select countries in South America.

Compared to the regular-sized Starlink, the Mini version integrates the WiFi router with the satellite dish, and is appoximately as thick as your high-end gaming laptop. It only consumes an average of 20-40w (the regular version consumes 33-62w), yet SpaceX CEO Elon Musk claims that the Starlink Mini can deliver speeds that range between 50Mbps and 100Mbps, only takes around 5 minutes to set up, and can be carried in a backpack. It’s also capable of connecting up to 128 devices simultaneously.

Being significantly compact, it’s possible to power the Starlink Mini via a power bank–but you’ll need one that supports 100 USB-PD charging. A 10000mAh power bank give it an hour of use, while larger 27650mAh (99.54wH) can give it 2 to 3 hours of use. The device weighs approximately 3.37 pounds with the DC power cable and kickstand, and has an IP67 rating–making it ideal for digital nomads who like to work outdoors and in remote areas.

The kit will cost you $500(~Php 30k), and you’ll need to subscribe to the Mini Roam service, which is priced at $30(~Php 1.8k) a month and gives you 50GB data allocation. Currently, the Starlink Mini is available on an invite-only basis.

There are no details yet if Starlink will make it available in the Philippines, but those residing in South America can get if for a discounted price of $200(~Php 12k).
