The HONOR X40 is a Mid-Range Phone with a Curved AMOLED Display

9 months after announcing the Magic3 lookalike X30, HONOR announced its successor in China with the X40. While it downgraded on a few features–charging is down to 40w instead of 66w, and the selfie snapper is 8-megapixels instead of 16-megapixels, the main selling point of the X40 is that it comes with a curved AMOLED display.

It’s a pretty premium one too, as it comes with a 120hz refresh rate, 300hz touch sampling rate, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and up to 800nits of brightness. Considering that this is a mid-range phone, you’d be hard-pressed to find one that has a flagship-like display.

Like the X30, the X40 is powered by a Snapdragon 695 processor with up to 12GB RAM and up to 256GB storage. Aside from the display, the X40’s other distinguishing feature is the huge, circular camera module in the back that has a large empty space in the middle. The two cameras–a 50-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor–are placed on the black area of the large circular module. We don’t know the rationale behind the design, but we guess it’s enough to make the X40 stand out in the saturated mid-range crowd.

Keeping the lights on is a large 5100mAh battery, and software is taken care of by Android 12-based MagicUI 6.1. Don’t expect it to have Google services, since the X40 appears to be exclusive to China, at least for now.

HONOR X40 Specs:

  • Snapdragon 695 processor
  • 6GB/8GB/12GB RAM
  • 128GB/256GB storage
  • 6.67-inch Full HD+ Curved AMOLED display, 120Hz refresh rate, 300hz touch sampling rate
  • 50-megapixel f/1.8 main camera with PDAF, 2-megapixel f/2.4 depth sensor
  • 8-megapixel f/2.0 selfie camera
  • 4G, 5G
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC
  • In-display fingerprint scanner
  • 5100mAh battery
  • 40w charging
  • Android 12, MagicUI 6.1

The HONOR X40 starts at CNY 1499(~Php 12.3k) for the 6GB/128GB variant, which makes it the most affordable phone to date to have a curved AMOLED display. The X40 remains to be exclusive to China, and we don’t know if HONOR intends to make it available globally like some of its phones.
