Customs officials in Shenzen, China, caught a smuggler trying to sneak in 102 iPhones into the mainland by strapping the handsets to her body. The unnamed female suspect, dubbed the “Female Iron Man” by local news, was attempting to smuggle the iPhones from Hong Kong, where the price of the said smartphone is relatively cheaper. The enterprising woman also brought 15 luxury watches along for the ride, with her total haul weighing in at over 44 pounds.
According to Chinese news outlet XMNN, the customs personnel were suspicious that the woman was wearing “unusually inappropriate” clothing for the hot weather. Also, her torso section “seemed out of proportion” compared to her slim arms and legs. They pulled her aside, did a pat-down, and discovered her smuggling “setup”.
Unfortunately, the woman was unable to break the “iPhone Smuggling Record” set in 2015 by a man who was caught red-handed with 146 iPhone handsets. The Female Iron Man will have to settle for second place, as she did manage to topple the previous second placer, with 94 iPhones (nearly) smuggled.
The price of an iPhone 7 is 30% more expensive in mainland China due to taxes and levies.
