Huawei Watch GT 2e Hands-On Review Philippines: Can Cheaper Be Better?

Huawei Watch GT 2e Hands-On Review Philippines: Can Cheaper Be Better?

I got my hands on the Huawei Watch GT 2e.

I first learned about it during the launch of the P40 series but wasn’t expecting to receive a unit because of the quarantine.  I was pleasantly surprised when it was delivered to my doorstep a couple of days ago.  Now, more than ever, I’ve been trying to be active and healthy.  The timing is perfect for me to test out the watch.

There’s much to love about this smartwatch but it’s not perfect either.  Let’s get to it.

Younger, Sportier Design

While the Huawei Watch GT 2 has a classic look, the GT 2e is sportier and seems to be geared more towards a younger market.  The silicone strap has tiny perforations, making it more breathable which is perfect for working out.  They are soft, comfortable and removable, so I can change the strap to whatever color whenever I want to.  I have the mint green color variant although it is also available in lava red, graphite black and icy white.

Big, Bright and Responsive Display

The screen of the Huawei Watch GT 2e is a 1.39-inch retina grade AMOLED display.  The colors are vibrant and punchy and it’s bright enough to be used outdoors.  It is incredibly responsive as well.

While I’ve been enjoying the big display, I can’t help but wish that it had a smaller variant like the Huawei Watch GT 2 that came in 2 sizes: 42mm and 46mm.  The GT 2e only comes in 46mm.  It’s perfect on the wrist of guys and girls with a bigger frame.  It’s way too large for a petite person like me.

100 Exercise Modes

You read that right.  Just like the more expensive Huawei Watch GT 2, the GT 2e supports smart tracking for 100 sports including 15 professional workout modes (outdoor and indoor) and 85 types of sports in different categories including extreme, leisure, aquatics, fitness, ball game, etc.  No matter what kind of workout you’re into, you’ll definitely find the right exercise mode to track your progress.

Two Weeks of Battery Life

If there’s one thing I love about the Huawei Watch GT 2 series, it’s the incredible battery life.  Of course, this can vary depending on your usage.  If your GPS is on all the time or if the watch is always paired with your headphones, then of course it would affect battery life.  From experience though, it can last for days without having to top up.

Remote Shutter and Timer for Your Photos

While the update hasn’t been rolled out yet, you can eventually use your Huawei Watch GT 2e to take photos!  When paired with your smartphone, there will be a camera icon on the watch UI that you can tap and use to take pictures remotely through your phone.

Incredibly Similar to the Huawei Watch GT 2

In many ways, the Huawei Watch GT 2e is just like the more expensive Huawei Watch GT 2.  They both have a stainless steel body, water resistance up to 50 meters, comprehensive fitness tracking, and health features such as heart rate, stress and sleep monitoring.  They also use the same Kirin A1 chipset that features dual Bluetooth 5.1 mode.

So why is the GT 2e cheaper?  Well, the newest Huawei smartwatch does not have a mic and a speaker.  This means that you will be notified if you have calls but you cannot answer them using the watch. You also have to be connected to speakers or earphones for you to be able to listen to music while working out.

Verdict:  Incredible for the Price

The Huawei Watch GT 2e is Php 6,990.  Since it is priced lower than the Huawei Watch GT 2 which is Php 10,990 for the silicone strap version, we can expect Huawei to cut some features.  I think that it has all the essentials though – fitness tracking, health monitoring, GPS and the Kirin A1 chipset to name a few.  It may be lacking some smartwatch features but as far as fitness watches go, the Huawei Watch GT 2e is definitely worth considering.  It is now available on Lazada.
