Xiaomi is flexing its superfast fast charging tech today that can fully charge up a 4000mAh smartphone to 100% from 0 in just 8 minutes. The new tech, dubbed Xiaomi HyperCharge, will first debut in the company’s Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro.
The new technology was shared in a tweet by the company as a custom-built solution made for the Xiaomi 11 Pro. While the company didn’t indicate if that the tech will be coming on other phones, it’s not a stretch to assume that it’ll also be landing in the brand’s other flagship devices in the future.
Xiaomi showed off just how fast their Hypercharge tech works on both wired and wireless charging in another tweet. For wired charging, you get a 10% charge in 44 seconds, 50% charge in 3 minutes, and 100% full in 8 minutes with Hypercharge’s 200W charging. On the other hand, you get a 10% charge in 1 minute, 50% in 7 minutes, and 100% in 15 minutes for wireless charging with Hypercharge’s 120W charging. For reference, Xiaomi’s current fast charging tech tops out at 120W.
A test by Android Authority shows that Xiaomi’s previous 120W charger doesn’t exactly offer 120W but rather 80W of power. It takes 21 minutes to get from zero to full on the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra which has two batteries with a combined 4,500 mAh capacity. Still, the newer technology offers much faster charge times compared to this.
In spite of these impressive speeds, skeptics have also left comments on Xiaomi’s tweet expressing concerns about how fast charging may affect the battery’s longevity as well as concerns for safety. This is possibly linked to how hot a device can get from fast charging. It seems that people aren’t quite over how fast charging tech has been linked to phones exploding although there is no evidence proving this.
