Toyota Motor Philippines surprised everyone during the 2nd leg of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup when they brought in the 2022 Toyota Hilux GR-S to the event. The pickup truck that was displayed was a total crowd-pleaser during the whole event at Clark International Speedway. Of course, we did not let the opportunity slide and checked the vehicle out.
Bear in mind that no formal announcement has been made yet about this model. According to reports, this new model will be out in the market on November 3 this year. Until then, details are limited, but let us share with you what we know so far.
Starting with the engine, the Toyota Hilux GR-S is using the top-spec Hilux Conquest’s engine. This is the 2.8-liter turbo diesel capable of producing 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Transmission is a six-speed automatic and the drivetrain is 4×4. Of course, they cannot just put on a GR badge and call it a day. The Hilux GR-S comes with mechanical improvements. The suspension setup is bolstered with KYB monotube shock absorbers to further improve the double-wishbone setup at the front and the leaf spring rigid axle at the back. In addition, the disc brakes are upgraded with GR calipers.
As for the exterior, the new Hilux GR-S is unmistakable. There are lots of GR badges everywhere: in the front grille, side fenders, rear gate, brake calipers, and more. Even the 18-inch wheels are GR branded.
Inside is the same as the outside in terms of GR badging. There are simply just lots of GR badges posted in this car. The instrument cluster, steering wheel, and door trims are GR branded. The seats are made of leather and suede, with red stitching and accents. Also, it comes with the GR Sport aluminum pedals.
As for tech and safety, the Hilux GR-S is basically the same as the top-spec Hilux Conquest. This means it has the driver-assist tech, a 360-degree-view monitor with parking sensors, a smart keyless entry system, push-to-start ignition, and an eight-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Other features are cruise control, gloss black accents, paddle shifters, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
