Aside from making the Ryzen 7000 series processors for desktops official, AMD also revealed that these processors will be using an all-new AM5 socket, replacing the AM4 socket used by previous-generation Ryzen processors for the past 6 years.

Aimed toward being upgradable for the years to come, the AM5 socket will have native support for both DDR5 RAM (up to 6400Mhz), along with support for PCIe 5.0 RAM. The socket itself shifts to a 1718-pin LGA, and the socket will be able to deliver up to 230w for more headroom for overclocking.

Despite being a completely new socket, AMD assures that CPU coolers made for AM4 sockets will be compatible with AM5. In addition to that, the AM5 socket will still have support for PCIe 4.0, which should be great for those who want to hold off from upgrading to PCIe 5.0 for the time being.

With its support for DDR5 and PCIe 5.0, AMD commits to support AM5 through 2025 and beyond, ensuring a long timeframe that users can utilize AM5 socket-based motherboards when it comes to making upgrades down the line.

To kick off the launch of AM5, AMD will be launching four motherboard models: X670 and X670 Extreme in September, and B670 and B670 Extreme in October. The difference between the Extreme and non-Extreme models is that the former has PCIe 5.0 support for both GPU and SSD–the latter only supports PCIe 5.0 to the SSD.

Those who desire to overclock their RAM will have AMD’s EXPO (Extended Profiles for Overclocking) feature, which is a one-click overclocking solution for DDR5 RAM. With the said tech, AMD promises as much as an 11% improvement in gaming performance at 1080p.

AM5 socket-based motherboards will start at $125(~Php 7.1k) and will be available in September starting with the X670 series.
