Corning Announces Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ For Camera Lenses

While smartphone screens have been getting increased protection through advancements in glass technology, the cameras on them haven’t been getting the same love, leaving the precious (and sometimes very expensive) modules vulnerable to damage. That ends today – Corning has officially announced their new Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ for camera lenses, giving future smartphone snappers protection from the world.

So why did it take Corning this long to make them? Well, for one thing, you can’t just slap the same kind of glass that they use to protect screens in your camera sensors, since they’d affect overall picture quality. The Gorilla Glass DX and Gorilla Glass DX+ aren’t just made to be tough – they also minimize reflections as well as capture 98% of light, important for smartphones that have photography at their core.

We expect that the Corning Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ will hit premium smartphones first since the complexity of the new glass formulation isn’t going to make them cheap. As for the first phone to have the new glass tech, Corning says that Korean juggernaut Samsung will get first dibs on it, though they didn’t specify which upcoming model would have it. Given that Samsung is expected to announce their new flagships on August 11 during Unpacked, we’d wager that Sammy’s new foldables would get first dibs on the tech.
