DILG might remove the EDSA busway

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said that motorists and commuters in Metro Manila might see the eventual removal and phase-out of the EDSA Busway, as well as the use of bike lanes to accommodate motorcycle traffic as a way to manage the horrendous Manila traffic that has become world famous by now.

This was revealed during the a meeting held for the Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan for Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

The EDSA Busway was implemented during the pandemic as a way to decongest the MRT. It has since become a way for consumers to quickly avoid the traffic snarl of EDSA since it is a dedicated lane that only buses, emergency vehicles and a few entitled motorists (and politicians) use.

Remulla said that the bus lanes will be phased out in line with the projected capacity increase in the volume of MRT passengers.

“Now, the capacity will be increased. More wagons will be added. The rails will be modified. It will be able to take 800,000 [referring to passengers], which will make up for the number of people riding the bus every day,” he said in a report.

This is feasible if the MRT is operating 24 hours a day.
