DITO is Catching up Nicely with Globe, Smart Heading to 2023

Despite DITO being a minority players against Globe and Smart in the mobile telco space, new reports from Opensignal reveal promising findings on the third telco’s performance leading to 2023. One of the metrics Opensignal analyzed is core consistency, which focuses more on network availability and stability over speeds.

In its analysis, DITO has edged out Globe and Smart in Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, and Central Luzon regions for core consistent quality. It is in Ilocos where Globe edged out DITO in the said metric. Smart, on the other hand, is trailing behind both Globe and DITO for third place, with Central Luzon being an exception as it edged out Globe for the second spot in terms of core consistency.

Looking through other regions in the Philippines, DITO, Smart, and Globe are very competitive in Metro Manila with core consistency, which shows that DITO has caught up very well in one of the most busiest regions in the Philippines. The same results are seen with the Mimaropa region.

Mobinh down to the Calabarzon region, it’s a tight race between Globe and DITO, which is similar to what Opensignal gathered in Cagayan Valley. Things are vastly different in the Bicol region, as Globe has the clear advantage against Smart and DITO with core consistency. The results obtained with the Luzon area presents that Smart has been a bit complacent this 2022, allowing Globe and DITO to catch up through adding new infrastructure and upgrading existing ones.

But how about the Visayas and Mindanao regions? DITO is the leader in the Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Soccskargen regions, while Smart is leading in Central Visayas, Bangsamoro, and Davao regions.

Overall, DITO has placed first or joint forst for core consistent quality in 15 out of 17 regions, which is an impressive feat for a relatively new telco. Among the factors contributing to this is that DITO is still expanding its coverage, prioritizing urban areas over rural areas leading to 2023.

Further corroborating with what Opensignal told us in our exclusive interview, DITO does not operate any 2G or 3G networks, and focuses more on 4G and 5G. This is set to change for both Globe and Smart moving forward, as they are set to end their support for 3G services: Globe has ended 3G sim sales since October 2020 and Smart plans to shut down its 3G network in 2023.
